Japan Society - Shomei Tomatsu, Skin of the Nation

2004

New York, New York

The design was informed by Tomatsu's focus on the horizon: a sign of foreboding in his A-Bomb portraits and of optimism in his re-discovery of the landscapes and people of Okinawa. Display walls feature horizontal panels that fold around the galleries, pacing the visitor through each of the sections: Apres-Guerre, Americanization, The A-Bomb, Underground City, The Post-Post War, The South, and finally, Skin of the Nation. Curated by Sandra Philips of SFMoMA.
