Japan Society - Five Tastes

New York, New York

An exhibition investigating an aesthetic and cultural approach to the appreciation of traditional Japanese design. Japanese utilitarian objects including basketry, ceramics, lacquer, metalwork, and textiles are presented in five areas of Japanese aesthetic taste, from Artless Simplicity (soboku) to Edo Chic (iki). The design guides the viewer through spaces that reflect the five tastes, shifting in scale, rhythm, color, and atmosphere.
