City Lights

2004: New York, New York

International Competition Finalist

"The lamp is the symbol of prolonged waiting" Gaston Bachelard, The Poetics of Space

Our Design for a new standard streetlight for New York City was one of three chosen among over 200 international entries. The design strikes a balance between the familiar and the utterly new, responding to the need for superior technical performance and aesthetic innovation. The pole is a unifying streetscape element—a calligraphic curve that tapers to its apex, creating a visual relief against the vertical backdrop of the city. The luminaire's custom reflector provides glare-free light, and protects the dark sky above.
