Chateau de la Rochefoucauld

Concept Design 1999-2003

Charentes, France

The Rochefoucauld family, which has lived at in the Chateau since it was built in the 14th C. has decided to open it to the public by rebuilding the keep, which collapsed in 1969. Creating a museum and visitor center, Imrey Culbert, with I.M. Pei Architect as design consultant, designed a cantilevered new structure off the existing medieval walls, preserving the ruined remains of the keep below. The glass-enclosed tower will provide a new circulation link with the adjoining wings and serve as a public reception within this private domain.
